Why volunteer groups?

Oikocredit Support Associations are collectives of volunteers whose members are engaged in promoting Oikocredit’s mission. Volunteer associations are part of a long-standing tradition in Oikocredit’s work. In addition to being active volunteers for Oikocredit, Support Associations are members of the Oikocredit International cooperative.

Oikocredit has two Support Associations based in the US – the Western Pennsylvania Support Association and the Oikocredit Northwest Support Association based in Seattle. Click on the regions to learn more about how you can get involved in your local Support Association.

The Western Pennsylvania Support Association has encouraged more than 150 individuals and organizations (mainly churches) to support Oikocredit’s work by committing more than one million dollars of their resources to empower disadvantaged people. Since 1985, the Association has been bringing together people in Western Pennsylvania who are interested in Oikocredit’s unique approach addressing poverty and issues relating to economic development.

Activities of the Association Include:

  • Providing educational programs around issues of global economic development
  • Sharing information about Oikocredit with individuals, groups, and churches
  • Encouraging participation in Oikocredit through capital funds
